In the 35th paragraph of that
despatch you refer to the assistance
given by the Imperial Government to the
Colony of Mauritius on the occasion of
the disastrous hurricane which visited
that Island two years ago and state
that you have no doubt that if you
should hereafter appeal for similar
consideration, it would be generously extended to Hong Kong.
I think it undesirable to
leave this passage without some notice on my part and I would therefore ob-
serve that the circumstances of the
disaster
